Welcome to Currents

Welcome to the Winter 2008 edition of Currents, the Anusara Yoga® newsletter. In this issue, we honor the spirit of selfless service, or seva, with the theme, "Grateful Hearts: Compassion in Action." The emphasis that Anusara Yoga places on community, ‘remembering the universal source,’ and enhancing life in artistically creative and uplifting ways, nurtures the spirit of giving back. John Friend is always reminding us that we are all inextricably interconnected, like many different threads that make up one universal tapestry of being. In his classes he brings our attention to the fact that our intentions, thoughts and actions send out ripples of energy that impact and shape the world we are a part of. He encourages us to be sensitive and compassionate and to choose to offer our lives in ways that positively impact others and the environment we all share. To that end, part of the proceeds from the Dharma Talks John conducts, are given to various charitable organizations.
Putting the teachings into practice, some of our Merry Band members give back to the world around them with projects and fundraisers that change and enhance the lives of many people and communities. One such person, Tanya Beilke, shines in this edition’s Teacher Spotlight. Darren Rhodes, a powerful practitioner, devoted student, and service-oriented community member, is the perfect teacher to present Hanumanasana as this issue’s featured pose. Hanuman, a mythical figure in the Hindu pantheon, personifies the spirit of seva, with his legendary leap from India to Sri Lanka in his quest to free the captive Sita from the demon king Ravana. February is the kickoff month for John Friend's "Light the Sky" tour. This powerful slogan reminds us that with the unconditional and selfless love in our hearts we can literally brighten the world we live in. Check out the new tour poster and clothing, and find some wonderful music from Anusara-inspired yoga teacher™, Ann Minoff, whose proceeds go directly to supporting those in need of assistance. Our Inspirations page highlights a variety of compassionate hearts in the Anusara Yoga community who put their love for all into action in a number of ways. Learn about what they are doing to help others, and maybe you will be inspired to get involved yourself – a simple way would be to contribute some ideas on green living for the next issue of Currents. Email us at newsletter@anusara.com with your tips on environmentally conscious choices.
May your hearts be filled with gratitude for the blessings in your lives and may your gratitude fill you with a desire to uplift and bring blessings to the lives of others.
In Service to the Shakti,
